The bold curved form of Harlow’s proposed new theatre was conceived as a flowing, playful stroke of a writers pen. It forms the centrepiece of the new masterplan for Town Centre North which aims to elevate Harlow to the status of an exemplar future city. The new theatre will form a key part of Harlows new unique and vibrant entertainment district providing state of the art performance facilities which will facilitate a broad range of productions including plays, musicals, small scale ballet, comedy and lectures. The main auditorium will seat over 1200 people, with the curved plan offering best possible sightlines and acoustics. A second studio auditorium will provide the facility for smaller productions and events and will offer maximum flexibility to performers and directors. Fulfilling its role as a catalyst for the arts, the new theatre will provide the people of Harlow with high quality theatre, rehearsal spaces and dance studios and will become a beacon for culture in Essex.
The theatre shall present the audience with the impression of a purpose designed contemporary theatre of modest and intimate scale and the interior shall be quiet, focussed and provide a relaxing and comfortable environment for the presentation. Interior lighting shall bring the whole interior to life for the arrival of the theatre goer and when dimmed-out will allow the auditorium features to entirely disappear for the start of the performance to create a subdued matt interior in response to the well lit stage. The stage design shall benefit from overstage grid & suspension of scenery in a full height fly tower to give greatest flexibility to the widest range of users and production types.
